My review… take it for what it is… mine. (I provide my story so that you can see why I purchased this computer. If you don’t care, don’t read the review).
To me, Mac always seemed like it would take a leap of faith. Having had very little interaction with Macs and even less knowledge about them, I was set to be a Windows boy for life. However, recently I found out that I will be going on a ship that is gone all of the time (I’m in the Navy). Needing to have my kids see me reading books to them and me needing to see my kids, I planned on leaving my current laptop with my wife and getting a new one for me (she doesn’t care about electronics). This way we could create DVDs and send them to each other for our kids and myself. I went into a store looking to spend not too much and was attracted by the HP entertainment laptops. However… when looking at a $[...] laptop I knew I would have to add an anti-virus ($[...]-$[...]) and a movie making program ($[...]-$[...]). The guy at the store told me that for what I was looking at in price I should check out the Macs.
Low and behold… there were the Macs. Each sitting there, looking different, and pricey. I was then told about iLife and how I would be able to use iMovie to make my movies, iChat to chat with my family on webcam, iPhoto to import and fix up pictures, and other stuff. WoW! My previous experience with the Windows based programs of this nature was that you’d be better off buying these types of software than using what was included by the computer. However, the sales guy, who was not on commission, swore by them. Also, Macs don’t need anti-virus software to boot! I was sold when he told me the difference in the customer satisfaction index when comparing Macs and all of the other computer makers.
I took the plunge.
As you can see from my stars… I’m glad I did. I will NEVER go back to a windows based PC. EVER. While this computer has a few cons, which I will list later, it is much better than what you can get for the same price as far as a PC. Here is what I liked:
The Exterior:
This computer is small. Its compact, it feels really sturdy, and its stylish. There is an apple on the back that lights up from the light of the LCD screen, pretty neat. Also, the keys have just the right punch for those of us that know how to type. The F keys also double for the bright level of the screen, the feature expose (which is outstanding!), and movie stop, go, vol, etc. There is an eject button next to the F12, which works well with this type of drive.
The Interior: iLife is a great program. All of the stuff that comes with it will ensure that unless you need something very very professional you won’t have to buy any software. Home videos are awesome with this thing. I can’t really compare Leopard to the previous operating systems… since this is my first mac… but I can tell you that it kicks vista’s butt. An example; I wanted to hook up my printer, which has only been used on Windows PCs before, and I plugged it in. That’s it. I plugged it in and it worked. No drivers, no software, nothing. As soon as I plugged it in and click to make it my default printer it was printing. HOLY COW! THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN MISSING! Since I’ve started using my Mac I have had ZERO “trying to find a solution to the problem” pop ups, ZERO “this program has stopped working”, ZERO freezes, ZERO compatibility issues with current hardware (external drive of music and wireless network), and ZERO defects found.
Now the cons:
1) 120 GB hard drive… Yes its easy to hook up the “time machine” or to keep all of your photos or movies on an external hard drive, but for a company that has a 120 GB MP3 player that’s just over $[...]… come on!
2) The mouse pad doesn’t let you double click for actions to occur. You have to push the button. As a lifetime Windows user this took some getting used to. However… you can scroll up and down easily by using two fingers. I’ve enjoyed this so much that I’m going to call it a draw
3) No multimedia slot for media card, etc. Apple! What are you doing?!?! Its a simple thing to install and it make it much easier for me so that I don’t have to always remember where that stupid USB cord that hooks my camera to my computer is. I’d much rather take the card out and insert it.
That’s all of my cons.
Once again… I LOVE THIS MAC. On the 2 GB of RAM that it has it works just as well as a windows PC with 4 or more GB. That’s because the OS is designed better and the processes don’t bog it down. The processor is fast enough to where this seems faster than my wifes 2.4 gHZ laptop (of course that is in conjunction with other aspects of the computer). The colors are great, and the system is great. You WILL have the “Mac Learning Curve” as I was told… it takes about 4-5 hours to get used to and 10-15 to really get to know, but its worth it. Plus, Apple puts videos on each function so that when you open it, it explains how to use it.
I took the leap of faith, and now I’m a believer. So long windows!!! Never again! Spend the extra [...]-[...] bucks… you’ll save it anyway by not having to get the anti-virus and having all the stuff you need on it. Oh, and go to [...] after you get your Mac. Its a non-profit site that I’ve started using to help me learn the system and it’s great.
FIVE STARS!
***UPDATE***
Still using this MacBook and still loving it. I’ve gotten really good with what it has to offer and am still amazed at how easy it is to use compared to Windows based PCs. The iLife 09 software (incl) has proven itself very useful and works well with other software. An example, Photoshop works well with iPhoto. I haven’t run into any wall and still recommend it with 5 stars.

I have been a long time Windows user and have switched to Apple Leopard. I finally got so fed up with the Vista operating system that I ordered a Mac Book from Amazon. I received the package on time, the ordering process was painless – just a few clicks. I got a newest version of this laptop. Not really knowing what to expect from this little laptop, I was pleasantly surprised that the learning curve is a lot easier than I thought it would be. I am very impressed with the way this laptop works, it is fast, it looks fantastics, and oh, my God, it turns on quicker. I have had Vista for a long time and sometimes I had to sit and wait for the operating system to start up (as long as 12 minutes – timed). This one is ready to go in about 30 seconds, got to love it.
I am very impressed with the service I got from Amazon – I’ll be a long time customer!!

This is my first mobile Mac – and I like it. I had spent more than a few hours pondering the decision of which MacBook to get and I feel that I picked the right one for my needs.
This White 2.0 MacBook is a terrific combination of price and features: you can expect similar performance to the uni-body Aluminum 2.0 MacBooks, but $100s cheaper. Plus, this MacBook comes with FireWire and uses cheaper DDR2 ram. Only significant trade off that I can see is losing the uber-cool uni-body design. Less significant is not getting the uni-Body’s LED backlight, multi-touch, and some monitor support.
Comparing this MacBook to previous generation MacBooks (non-unibody); the change to the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M will provide a large boost in graphics performance over the Intel units. Supposedly, this is new hardware that OS X 10.6 will be able to take further advantage of.
Overall performance has surprised me. I had planned to drop in 4GB of ram and a 7200 rpm hard drive, but I am so pleased with the operation that I just don’t see the need. I use it for web browsing, iPhoto, Mail, Word, Excel, etc. So far I have not experienced any stutters or pauses. If I were to run Vista apps or edit HD video, I am sure that this might change the need for more ram.
Regarding comfort, I have not noted any heat build-up, nor is there excessive fan noise. Keep in mind that I haven’t taxed it much. The overall build quality seems fine.
Through the years I usually bought from Apple’s refurb store, but I am am very pleased with this purchase and feel that I received an excellent value.
Follow-up Feb 26, 2009: “Still 5 Stars”
After several weeks of use on a daily basis, I continue to be impressed by this product and just how much OS X has advanced (and I am also a very heavy XP/Vista laptop user in my professional life). Everything just comes together so well and this MacBook’s performance continues to surprise me. I just slammed it pretty hard by applying facial recognition to our 12,000+ piece iPhoto library and it just works great. Apple sure made up some ground in the last couple years.

This is the 2nd Mac that I have had after my Powerbook G4.
If one thing I have learned about these machines is that they hold up very well to wear and tear.
There isn’t too much more that I can say that everyone else has said already except that for what you spend you get top notch quality.
A lot of people are afraid to go Mac because they are so used to WIndows but take it from a long time windows user, after a few months playing with these Macs, you will wonder what took you so long to come here!
The only gripe I still have is that there is no SD card reader!!
Best of all you very rarely ever have to worry about any issues with these machines. My wife has had a G5 for the past 4 years with no problems, while I have been through at least 3 Windows machines and AV/Spyware programs so it was just inevitable that I would make the move. If you are that afraid of Mac, you can always get a Macbook and install boot camp which will allow you to use Windows but best believe you may ditch it before long!
Let Bill Gates go!

This is my very first Apple computer and it has been the best computer purchase i have ever made. I recently switched from a PC to the MacBook and i have no regrets. This Mac has performed flawless since day one, no crashes, no frozen screens, no hard drive sounds or fan noises. It only takes about one day to get used to the slight changes in the operation of the Mac vs PC, once you get used to it you’ll never go back to PC again. Goodbye Windows Vista!!!

The new Nvidia 9400M card is much better than the Intel GMA 950 (I have also a mid-2007 MacBook white), but only when I run Second Life and things like that. Google Earth is only marginally better. Well, Nvidia 9400M is not so good like the MacBook Pro’s video, but it’s good enough for me – I don’t play games so often.
Also, this new MacBook white do things a little bit (but notable) quicker than my former MacBook, even when the old one is 2.16GHz and the new is 2.0GHz.
The keyboard seems to be a little weaker than in the Mid-2007 MacBook. I can’t explain the exact difference (it’s like… softer to press), in the beginning it seemed like it would break easily, but now I really don’t think it’s gonna break soon.
It also doesn’t almost burn my left hand, like my former MacBook did. This new MacBook is much cooler. My experiments showed it is about 15 to 20 Celsius degrees cooler when using the processos intensively.
Besides these differences, this is the exact same product as the Mid-2007 MacBook white. But now cheaper.
And to clean the white plastic, I recommend using Limplex. If you don’t find it in your country, you may buy it in Brazil on the internet, it’s cheap and very very good.

If you want a quality product, with ease, accessibility, and performance then get yourself a Mac. Been struggling through the web universe for the past 8 years with an old reliable PC. And yes, while the two different it is very easy to get used to a Mac interface.
No need to worry about different language, or ease into a Mac lifestyle. I just took it out of the box, filled in the data in the intro and poof! mine! No hassle of ever installing driver discs for printers, and etc. As long as the interface allows for Mac, it works! hands down. Very few products now are made without Macs in mind, mice, printers, and software.
Con: I would not buy the “Mighty Mouse” mouse that goes with this Macbook. It got terrible reviews and seems to have broken on many clients. But any Logitech mouse or others work just fine, don’t even need to tell the Book it is plugged in, just use it.
Con: have to buy separately a case to carry the device in, which is ok considering there are so many styles out there. I recommend a sling bag from Belkin, very simple, and dozens of uses.
Pro: a Definite pro is the typing ease. It is so simple to type, it makes me jealous I ever lived with such harsh keys before.
Software: the software is installed already and is superb. Without fail they make editing, and music composer a breeze. Garage Band is a def must have.
Webcam: The web camera is amazingly high in pixels and takes great still shots through its “Photobooth” software. Or just having a good chat with family over the internet. It makes all other cameras seem less.
iLife is a great bundle that comes with the device, I would recommend PC users to install a Microsoft Word (Mac friendly) software just to adjust. TextEdit lacks certain desired capabilities.
So if you want something you can carry, it is just simple and works, buy this Macbook or another one. You won’t be sorry.
Buy it , or be deprived.

A good indication of addiction would be if I am so afraid of product discontinuation that I buy an identical one while available even if my current one is running well. I am almost tempted to do it. This one is destined to be a classic, in my opinion. Like many, I have used all sorts of laptops in the past and this is the only one that does not feel like a laptop — maybe because of the solid, smooth and sturdy plastic construction, maybe because of the clean white look, maybe because of the wonderful keyboard touch. Just about everything about this product exudes quality. It is so easy to underestimate this laptop because of its simple, benign look, but it runs programs actually faster than all my desktops. No squeaking anywhere after a full year of use and abuse. Quality parts in and out. The magnetic power adapter is a thing of beauty — without it, I would have destroyed the adapter outlet whenever I dropped it from my bed where I happen to use my laptop extensively.
I mostly use Windows Vista with this laptop, using the supplied bootcamp software. I see absolutely no degradation in speed or performance. No extra crashes either. When using Vista, the experience is just like any other Windows-running computers I have. This should be a big relief for Windows Vista users. So if you are hesitating purchasing this one just because you do not intend to use Windows, let me tell you this clearly: This thing beats almost all Windows-running computers on the Windows-turf.
If I make just one suggestion to Apple, it is that the outermost edges of the plastic cover on the keyboard side fall apart over time and perhaps this needs to be addressed. It does not affect the performance but I am concerned dusts may get inside the laptop, apart from aesthetic reasons. But since this product is so wonderful, I am willing to even let go of this issue. It is that good.
One suggestion to purchasers: To make this product even better, buy a 2G memory and a 250G internal hard disk from any internet vendor. They are so cheap these days. Just make sure you get the correct ones for this model; vendors will be most happy to assist you with that. It is a breeze to install them yourself (there are many sites on the Internet that show you how to do it step by step — it takes 5 minutes to install both the extra memory and the hard disk, although it takes much much longer to reinstall all your programs). Never buy higher spec model from Apple as you will grossly overpay for the bigger memory and bigger hard disk. Do this at the outset as soon as your purchase this one especially if you use Windows Vista as well with the bootcamp — you will quickly run out of the hard disk space since you have entirely separate two spaces with two operating systems.

I was a PC user my whole life. I went blind in April of 08 and a friend bought me an iPod Nano, which has a feature for speaking menus. I called Apple about their computers and found out that all Apple computers with Leopard OS 10 have a screenreader installed, called Voiceover. I went to the Apple store and gave it a test drive. Within a half hour, I knew the basics well enough, and took it home. I have taught myself everything about my Macbook using the help menus on the computer, Apple’s website, and forums.
Screenreaders for PC cost an additional 500 to 1,000 dollars, and must be purchased again to work with Windows OS upgrades. Since Voiceover is standard on all Apple computers, I can go to any Apple in the world with Leopard OS 10 and make it talk to me. I can even save my Voiceover settings on a jump drive and upload them to any Apple.
I am sold on Apple. Please, spread the word about how accessible they are for the blind and visually impaired. You can also hook up a braille output, so the deaf/blind can use it too. Apple is amazing, their tech support is amazing. I highly recommend this product, and please, tell your friends. I am thirty, and never used Apple computers before. I taught myself blind!

My first Mac purchase was the first Black Intel MacBook model ever made. I bought it used and have had it for just over a year. I’ve loved it, but grew tired of the Intel GMA 950 graphics chip fast and wanted the NVIDIA based MacBook in a bad way.
My old MacBook would spin it’s fans up at the drop of a hat: screensaver, webcam, flash videos (though Flash on Mac is pretty much poor regardless of your MacBook model. Thanks Adobe). This new MacBook is much quieter and has very noticeably smoother graphics rendering.
At first I was torn between buying the unibody (aluminum) and the white (polycarbonate) models. However, the white MacBook has left me with no regrets. I even bought a second one several days later for my wife.
On May 25th 2009, Apple slightly bumped up the specs on the white MacBook. The updates were negligible for me, so at $894.00, this has been a great deal.
In regard to the May 25th update to the white MacBook (MB881LL/A vs MC240LL/A):
You’ll never notice the difference between 2.0GHz and 2.13GHz or 667MHz and 800MHz RAM in day to day use. The hard drive difference is also small, 120GB vs 160GB. If the 40GB difference is an issue, I’ve got news for you, you’ll need a much larger drive anyways. Forty gigabytes won’t go very far for very long these days; unless you plan to time travel back to 2004 or so. My wife and I deal with lots of media, so I immediately replaced the 120GB drives with a 320GB replacements. A 120GB/160GB drive will suit most people just fine.
